He signed up for the CCIE assessor Lab

Lots of preparation, classes and workbooks!

A great source of info is an appendix of Cisco's CIT- and CID-course. The appendix is called "Protocol characteristics overview" and carries condensed info about almost all protocols and technologies (with very few exceptions)
