Rocky Mountain National Park: Hiking in 8700 feet elevation ; my niece Lena

wonderful nature, but thin air

Adrian got high altitude sickness and we had to go back

A still active gold mine ; visiting and gold panning (yes, we found gold)

Mesa Verde National Park  ; A long winding road will take you to heights more than 8400 feet above sea level and more than 1000 years back in time.

The sheer cliffs, deep canyons and plateaus of Mesa Verde (Spanish for 'green table') are scored with Ancestral Puebloan sites, some reaching five stories

and 200 rooms. This is one of the American South-West's most popular vacation areas.

Once occupied by the ancestral Puebloan Indian from 600 A.D. until sometime in the 1200s. And here are 2 modern 'city-indians' !!!

Grand Canyon in Arizona

Four Corners in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado; this is Ute and Navajo land !

Arches National Park Utah preserves over two thousand natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition

to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. The worlds largest concentration of natural stone arches.

A mountain lion on the tree with a young cat below

Great Sand DunesNational Monument Colorado; 39 square miles of sand dune, some of which top out at 700 feet high, higher than a 70-story building

The dunes are shifting constantly and walking around on them is strenuous. The sand can reach daytime temperatures of  140 Fahrenheit.

The wind on top of the dunes is so strong that the small sand particles hurt

Firefighters Day

Manitou Springs Cliff Dwellings  ; Native Americans perform dances in front of 'authentic Indian' ruins. The distinctive stone houses

tucked into the overhangs of Phantom Cliff Canyon were relocated here in the early 1900s by archaelogists who feared that their

original southwestern sites were too susceptible to plundering

A great evening at the Elk Lodge with food, dancing and great country music

Scottish Festival on Highlands Ranch

Grand Mesa National Forest ; the world's greatest mesa ;  53 square miles reaching altitudes of 11000 feet

The Land's End Road is not for the faint-hearted, for it plunges down the rim for 14 miles delivering dizzying views of the

Colorado River Valley, 5000 feet below

Hovenweep National Monument Utah ; Hovenweep is a Ute word meaning ' deserted valley' and it accurately describes this rocky arroyo landscape that straddles

the Colorado/Utah border. It was extremely hot and there are lots of rattlesnakes in the area. Six individual Ancestral Puebloan sites can be explored.

Monument Valley Utah / Arizona, home of many western movies,  is part of  the Navajo Nation and is considered one of the natural wonders of the world

because of the beauty of the enormous "monuments" of stone that have evolved  from nature. Photos from Dan Heller here. ; more photos

Many people call it the eighth wonder of the world and 2nd most photographed place on earth.    virtual panorama pictures here
