Frequently asked questions:

Where in the he.. is Thierhaupten ?

Above picture shows the famous Thierhaupten Monastery and was taken from the community's
homepage.

Some phantastic photos shot by neighbor Karl Bauer are shown here

Thierhaupten is located just about 15 km north from Augsburg, Germany, where the
old class location used to be before. Augsburg is located about 60 km west from
Munich.

All students loved the quiet environment here with no distractions.

Nice shot by Andrew

More info about the location here .

Here are 3 maps for you:  map1 ,     map2 ,  map3

Q&A:
I am scheduled in the xxx class in Thierhaupten and am having trouble

making arrangements to get from Munich to Thierhaupten. What would be the
easiest way to get to Thierhaupten from Munich? What airlines fly from Munich
to Thierhaupten?

Distance Munich-Thierhaupten is about 100 kilometers. There is no airline flying
such a close destination !

Either take a train. You must change trains though. This is the cheapest way.
But very uncomfortable with all the luggage. It takes about 2 hours.
You take a train from the munich airport to the central trainstation. Takes 45 minutes.
Then a train from Munich to Augsburg. Around 20 Minutes. Then a train from
Augsburg to Meitingen. 15 Minutes. From there either a bus (5 min) or a cab to
Thierhaupten.
BTW: The hotel offers a free pick-up service from the Meitingen trainstation
on the sunday
before the camp starts.

Click here for german railroad .
(If you lookup a connection straight from Munich Airport to Thierhaupten, you must use the term
"Thierhaupten Marktplatz" as the destination !)

There's also a Lufthansa -Shuttlebus from Munich Airport which brings you straight
to the Augsburg Central Trainstation. From there as above.
The shuttlebus departs about every 4 hours from munich. About 70 minutes driving. Costs
about 15 Euro one way.

The most comfortable way is taking a cab/taxi from munich Airport straight to the hotel in Thierhaupten.
It takes exactly 1 hour. I have made special arrangements with a  local cab-company. Registered students get more info.

Don't forget: Augsburg has an own airport as well . (the price to augsburg from abroad is the same)
The checkin-times in Augsburg are usually 20-30 minutes only. The cab-drive from the airport
to the hotel is about 15 minutes only. You should order the cab while still in the air.
About 20 minutes before landing the stewart asks the passengers who's needing a cab.
Don't  miss that. The cab would be there just in time waiting for you.

A new Airline has started connections again:
Berlin-Augsburg and Düsseldorf-Augsburg.

"Look, he printed my CCIE number on the
certificate !!!!"  :-)))

Where's the next computer shop ?

About 20 minutes driving by car, called  MediaMarkt.
I'm sure one of your classmates with a car would give you a lift or plans to go
there anyway.

There's another shop about 5 minutes driving from the class, but they don't have a
huge selection.

Where can I get snacks even if it's late night ?

Germany's shops aren't open 24 hrs a day ! Most close at 7.30 pm some even at 6 pm.
The hotel's restaurant is open until around 10 p.m.

We do have a fully equipped kitchen with microwave and a fridge.
Feel free to buy some stuff in advance in the supermarket and store it there.

There is also a khebab-stand open until 7 p.m. selling great döner khebab,
and grilled chicken.

On the other hand we have a good pizza-place with a home-delivery service.
The menu card and phonenumbers are  in the classroom.

Eating ( around 9 p.m.) in the classroom

And the hotel, where you stay, is just 5-7 minutes away (by foot).
This shouldn't  be a problem, walking a few minutes after having sat 10, 12 or even
more hours in the class.
(I highly recommend that you have a 10-30 minutes walk in the fresh air every day anyway.
The many hours in the class with minor movement is not too healthy. Most students have gained
weight during the camp.)

The hotel offers late-night-meals until around 23.00 hrs.

Great food every day ! Watch it ! All students have gained weight during the camp....

Enjoying life after being tortured all day by the "evil bastard"

There are several more restaurants in  town.  Students liked the steak-place (Abt Caspar) a lot. A greek restaurant opened
recently.

Lecturing while waiting for lunch
(it's apple juice, not beer !)

Is there any laundrette closeby ?

The hotel itself doesn't offer this service. But they offer my students
to use the hotel's washmachine once a week (on a pre-defined evening).

Any McDonalds around ?

McDonalds is about 20 minutes far (by car)

What can I do on the weekend ?

Studying, I hope !
:-))
You can get access to the equipment even on the weekend ! More details here .

Books on the pizza-service-menucard

How about internet access ?

Students have direct access straight from the classroom using high-speed SDSL .
POP3, HTTP works perfectly. VPN depends on the driver settings on your laptop.
There is a proxy and a firewall.

How long do banks open ?

Germany is a "service-desert". Banks are closed on saturdays, sundays
(and wednesday afternoon locally).
Most open at 8.30 am and close at 4.30 pm.

Exception is thursday where most banks are open until 6 pm.
Fridays they close at 15.00.
Credit cards are not widely accepted.
(the hotel accepts all major cards, except diners, though)
We do have 2 banks in town.

More info about the town, location and hotel here .

Can I speak to/chat with Heinz ?

Yes, via "voice over ip" and via ms-messenger. More info here.
